It’s true that the holidays are over, but I’m sharing with you my hit this year: poppy seed shortcrust muffins. It is a perfect substitute for traditional polish poppy seed cake. Every year my grandmother made poppy seed cakes, then me, from yeast dough. However, there are fewer of us and we eat less and less, so such single portions of shortcrust pastry muffins are perfect.

I do not add eggs to the poppy seed mixture and it seems to be a good solution. I also make the task easier by using ready-made poppy seed mass (but you can also replace it with any prepared poppy seed cake filling)


approx. 20 muffins (although it depends on the size of the molds)

  • 2 and 1/4 cups of wheat flour
  • 200 g butter or margarine
  • 2 medium yolks
  • 1/3 cup of powdered sugar
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of sour cream 18%
  • 1 teaspoon of almond extract


  • 850g poppyseed mass (1 can)
  • 1 handful of raisins
  • 1 handful of cranberries
  • 1 handful of chopped walnuts
  • 5 chopped dates
  • 1 handful of flaked almonds
  • orange peel
  • 1 teaspoon of orange extract
  • 1 tablespoon of honey (optional)

All ingredients for the cake: flour, butter or margarine, egg yolks, powdered sugar, salt, sour cream, vanilla extract; place in a bowl. Knead quickly and thoroughly. Form into a ball, cover with foil and place in the fridge for at least half an hour.

Place the filling ingredients in the bowl in which we kneaded the dough. Mix thoroughly.

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees C.

Grease the muffin tins with butter. – I use my mother’s muffin tins, but you can use a muffin tin.

Take the dough out of the fridge and roll it out. Using a cupcake cutter, cut out a circle and immediately fill the mold with the dough. If necessary, add pieces of dough to the ends to make sure everything is covered.

For each cupcake, add the poppy seed filling to the edges of the cupcake. We cut out stars, Christmas trees or other favorite patterns on top.

Bake in the oven for about 30-35 minutes until they are golden brown and fall away from the pan.

Cool, sprinkle with powdered sugar.
